Breaking: SwitchBot Launches Two Matter-Enabled Smart Locks Featuring 3D Facial Recognition

SwitchBot today introduced the Lock Vision and Lock Vision Pro, two smart locks that integrate with the Matter protocol and use advanced 3D facial recognition for near-instant door unlocking. The devices are now available with a $40 launch discount on Amazon and SwitchBot's website.

The locks support Matter-over-WiFi, making them compatible with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings. NFC functionality allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to unlock doors with a tap, no app required.

Facial Recognition Bypasses Photos, Video Spoofing

SwitchBot claims the facial recognition system uses "over 20,000 infrared dots" to build a 3D facial map accurate to the millimeter. According to the company, the technology is comparable to flagship smartphone face unlock and cannot be fooled by photographs or videos—even when users wear glasses, hats, or makeup.

"This level of 3D structured-light security has never been available in a sub-$200 smart lock before," said Dr. Elena Miro, a smart home security researcher at the University of Texas. "The infrared mapping creates a depth perception that 2D camera systems simply can't replicate."

Both models include multiple alternative unlocking methods: NFC, password keypad, iPhone app, Apple Watch, Siri voice commands, geofencing, and physical keys. The Lock Vision Pro adds palm vein scanning and fingerprint reader, with palm detection working even when hands are wet or dirty.

12-Month Battery Life and No Hub Required

SwitchBot designed the locks to replace a standard deadbolt directly. Each lock features mmWave radar that detects when someone approaches, triggering the facial recognition system. The 12-month battery life is backed by emergency power options (USB-C and 9V battery). Importantly, all biometric data is stored on-device, not in the cloud.

"On-device storage is a critical feature for privacy-conscious homeowners," noted James Park, a cybersecurity analyst at SecureTech Labs. "It eliminates the risk of cloud breaches exposing face or fingerprint templates."

Pricing and Availability

The SwitchBot Lock Vision is priced at $170 MSRP, while the Lock Vision Pro retails for $230. A launch promotion reduces prices by $40. No hub is required—both locks connect directly to WiFi.

Background

The Matter smart home standard, launched in 2022, aims to unify smart devices across ecosystems. Smart locks have been a key category for Matter adoption, but few models have integrated facial recognition at this price point. Traditional smart locks rely on PINs, keys, or fingerprint sensors; 3D face unlock has remained mostly in smartphones and premium security systems.

SwitchBot, known for budget-friendly home automation gadgets, previously offered retrofit locks without Matter support. The Lock Vision series marks the company's first native Matter smart lock lineup with advanced biometrics.

What This Means

For consumers, the SwitchBot locks lower the barrier to using hands-free unlocking secured by biometrics. Integration with Apple HomeKit via Matter-over-WiFi simplifies setup for iPhone users, while NFC adds convenience for Apple Watch wearers. The palm vein scanner on the Pro model provides an extra layer of hygiene—no touching required.

Security experts emphasize that while 3D facial recognition is robust, no system is foolproof. Users should enable strong PINs as a backup and keep firmware updated. The $170 starting price undercuts many competitors with similar features, potentially accelerating adoption of Matter-compatible biometric locks.
