Stack Overflow Founder Joel Spolsky Steps Back, Takes Sabbatical, Remains Chairman of Three Tech Firms

Joel Spolsky, the co-founder and former CEO of Stack Overflow, has stepped down from day-to-day operations, handing the reins to new CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar. Spolsky clarified in a personal update that he is not retiring but taking a "sabbatical," freeing up significant time while retaining chairman positions at three companies: Stack Overflow, Glitch (formerly Fog Creek Software), and the stealthy HASH project.
"I’m thinking of this time as a sabbatical, not retirement," Spolsky wrote. "I’m still going on some customer calls and have a weekly meeting with [Chandrasekar], but I have freed up a lot of time." He added that watching Chandrasekar reorganize the company has been satisfying, even humbling: "It’s really satisfying to realize that the best possible outcome for me is if he proves what a bad CEO I was by doing a much better job running the company."
Spolsky’s portfolio includes Glitch, a simplified web development platform now led by CEO Anil Dash, which has grown to millions of apps and secured fresh funding. He also backs HASH, an open-source simulation platform that models complex agent-based systems—like city traffic—without requiring closed-form formulas. "This kind of modeling is incredibly computationally intensive, but it works," Spolsky noted.
Background: Spolsky’s Evolution from CEO to Chairman
Spolsky co-founded Stack Overflow in 2008, building it into the world’s largest Q&A community for programmers. Under his leadership, the company expanded to include Stack Exchange and later rebranded its original software firm Fog Creek to Glitch. After more than a decade as CEO, Spolsky appointed Chandrasekar in 2021 and gradually withdrew from daily management.
The shift mirrors a broader trend in tech: founders handing off operational roles while remaining influential board members or chairmen. Spolsky now splits his time among three firms, each at different stages—Stack Overflow as a mature platform, Glitch as a growing community, and HASH as an early-stage venture.

Spolsky’s sabbatical signals that his era of hands-on CEO leadership is over, but his influence continues through chairmanship and advisory roles. While Spolsky describes himself as "really, really busy," the shift allows him to explore new challenges without the burden of daily operations. "I’m also really enjoying discovering just how little I knew about running medium-sized companies," he admitted, referencing his newfound perspective as an observer rather than CEO.
